The Best Small Coffee Machine for College

I didn’t start to truly enjoy coffee until my senior year in high school when I became accustomed to drinking the coffee my father brewed each morning. It was great having someone else prepare the coffee before I awoke each morning and then clean the coffee pot at the end of the day. Shortly after graduating, however, I realized that I would no longer be able to rely on someone else to brew my coffee. Instead, I would need my own machine to use while away at college, and I needed to pick one quickly. For those that have shopped for a coffee maker, it immediately becomes obvious that the choices are numerous and overwhelming. That being said, there are a few simple guidelines to follow when shopping for the best small coffee machine for college, as you will discover in the following article.

Fortunately, I didn’t need to concern myself with buying a small coffee maker since I ended up receiving one as a graduation gift along with a combo convection microwave oven. I received a small Black & Decker machine that brewed just 4 cups, which was the perfect size for a solo consumer. If you happen to be in the market for a student I would recommend purchasing a small machine, since they likely won’t have much space to store anything larger. I did happen to have easy access to a small kitchen sink in the common area of my dormitory, but such conveniences aren’t always guaranteed. Consider the following suggestions when purchasing a small coffee maker for student life:

1. Size is Important – consider a single cup coffee maker or a 4-cup machine at the most, since space is nearly guaranteed to be a limiting factor. Apart from their smaller overall footprint, a single cup brewer will also produce a fresh cup of coffee every time. No more stale coffee that has been sitting around all day.

2. Avoid Manual Devices – a French Press is a great device that can allow you to achieve a rich and flavorful cup of coffee, but it can also be a bit more involved than an automatic brewer. Most students desire maximum efficiency and likely won’t have the time needed for a fancier brewing device. Small coffee makers of the automatic variety fit the bill perfectly.

3. Don’t Spend a Fortune – for most students this will likely be the first of many small coffee machines they will own over their lifetime, so it’s important not to go overboard. Chances are that the student will not be able to distinguish between coffee brewed in a fancy Keurig brewer as opposed to a more affordable Mr. Coffee brewer. It’s also important to consider that other students may end up using the machine and may not be so careful with it.

The best small coffee machine for a college student should be small, affordable and easy to use. While caffeine can become an essential part of the college lifestyle, it doesn’t mean that you have to choose the fanciest machine available. After all, a $20 coffee maker will extract the same amount of caffeine as a machine 5 times its cost, so choose appropriately.
