Senseo Coffee Maker – The First Pod Coffee Maker

The way we brew coffee today is somewhat different than at any other time in the past. Throughout history there have been monumental achievements and breakthroughs in terms of devices and methods to brew our favorite morning beverage, though arguably none has been more exciting than the advent of the pod coffee maker. These simple devices offer a host of advantages of fully manual coffee makers, and even over the ubiquitous automatic small coffee maker. Thanks to these ingenious devices, it’s now possible to brew a fresh, great tasting cup of coffee in under a minute with just the press of a button. That’s right – insert a pod coffee into the machine, fill the water reservoir and press the brew button to receive some of the best tasting coffee you’ve ever experienced.

When it comes to purchasing one of these devices you will likely notice several key players. Names like Keurig, Melitta and Millstone are all synonymous with coffee pod technology, though there is one name that started it all – Senseo. The Senseo name is a trademark for the Dutch company Philips that introduced the first pod coffee makers to the world market in 2001. The company has since improved upon their design, releasing new versions of their popular machines in 2007 and 2008, which they refer to as the Senseo New Generation and Senseo Latte Select, respectively. Like other pod brewers, the Senseo coffee makers use individual pods of coffee to brew consistently great coffee. The Senseo coffee maker is able to achieve such consistency in large part because human input is greatly minimized. No longer does the user need to worry about measuring or grinding beans, nor do they need to be concerned with the amount of brew water they use – the Philips Senseo coffee maker does all of this automatically.

In terms of buying a Senseo pod coffee maker, there are currently a few models in production, the most popular of which is the Senseo SL7810/65 Single Serve Gourmet machine. This is the workhorse of the Senseo lineup and features an all black exterior and a relatively low price of just $65.00 through sites like Amazon. This machine is no-frills to be certain, though it does brew coffee exceptionally well as evidenced by multiple user reviews. Those looking for something a bit fancier will need to take a look at the Senseo SL7832/55, which features an all chrome exterior and an adjustable spout to accommodate different mug sizes. This machine is priced at around $130.00 through Amazon, though we don’t think the difference is worth the extra money.

There you have it – a quick and dirty rundown of the Phillips Senseo coffee maker lineup. Bottom line – if you’re looking for a reliable machine that can brew great tasting coffee in under a minute, you should strongly consider purchasing a Senseo coffee maker.
