Travel Coffee Makers
Those of us that love good coffee know how difficult it is to be without it for any extended period. Heck, we even find it hard to be without it for a day or two. Although it’s possible to grab a cup on run or when traveling, you really never know what you’re going to get, which is why it’s often important to take matters into your own hands. We understand that brewing your own coffee on the road can be challenging, though we think that we’ve found the perfect solution to keep you supplied with great tasting coffee wherever you go.
There’s no doubt about it – brewing coffee away from home requires a certain amount of commitment; dare I say, fanaticism. Taking a small coffee maker with you in your luggage, backpack or weekender may be viewed by some as slightly over-the-top, though we just can’t help ourselves. We revel in the satisfaction of expertly brewed coffee, particularly in the face of less satisfying alternatives. Before we get into the best travel coffee makers, we thought it would make sense to detail the steps we go to when traveling.
When preparing to take your coffee making on the road, the first thing you need to know is how long your trip will last. This will allow you to prepare enough ground coffee go last you throughout your entire trip. Once we know this information, we simply grind enough beans in our burr grinder to last us through our journey, taking care to store them in an airtight container. Storing the coffee grounds correctly is of critical importance, as improperly stored coffee can quickly become stale, and it can also permeate into your clothing and other items. Of course, this may be desirable to some.
For the two types of travel coffee makers we’ve selected, you will also need a source of heated water. For this we’ve found that an electric kettle works best. Theses kettles can boil water is just a minute or two and there are many models that are small enough to fit in your luggage; just remember to bring a power adapter if you’re traveling out of the country you reside in. Now that we have the basics covered, it’s time to review the machines that we feel are best to use when traveling.
1. Aerobie Aeropress – this is actually the coffee maker that many of us use while at home, though it can also be used effectively while on the road. The maker itself is actually completely manual and operates much like a French Press does, and requires no electricity to operate, unless you’re using an electric kettle to boil brew water for it. We love this little coffee maker because it packs small and allows us to achieve amazing coffee when using fresh ground beans and properly heated brew water. This coffee maker even features graduated measurements on its side, making the measuring process easy for both coffee grounds and water.
2. French Press – this is our next best choice for many of the same reasons that we like the Aeropress. Perhaps the only things that’s different about a press pot (as opposed to an Aeropress) is that the cup quality is a bit different. Coffee brewed with a French press will tend to be a bit richer and full bodied, and will also usually contain coffee sediment in the last ¼-inch of the cup. When traveling, it’s important to buy a plastic version as opposed to glass for obvious reasons.
There you have it – our vote for the best travel coffee maker options. While there are many more options to choose from including travel cup coffee makers and electric models, there is no simpler travel maker coffee option than those listed above.
